HE CREATES was born from the passion, vision, and lived experience of Harry “HEC” Ellis, a Washington, D.C. born visual artist, muralist, curator, and founder of Harry Ellis Creations.

Raised in the Nation’s Capital, Harry’s life was shaped by both the beauty and the pressure of his environment. After becoming entangled in the streets of D.C., he was sentenced to a lengthy prison term that carried him through part of his teens, most of his twenties, all of his thirties, and much of his forties.

But even in the middle of those circumstances, Harry refused to let prison define the end of his story. He turned to art as a form of release, discipline, healing, and transformation.

Harry is the artist who painted his way out of prison. Long before the gates opened, art became his path to freedom. Each brushstroke gave him a way to move beyond the walls, process his experiences, and imagine a different life for himself. With no formal training, he built his own artistic language through practice, observation, patience, and determination.

His work speaks to culture, memory, struggle, beauty, accountability, resilience, and the realities of life that are too often overlooked. Through portraiture, murals, storytelling, and community, centered projects, Harry creates work that invites people to look deeper, feel honestly, and form their own understanding.

On April 13, 2026, after more than two decades of incarceration, Harry came home with a renewed purpose. Since his release, he has been rebuilding his life, strengthening HE CREATES as a brand, and using his story as a bridge between creativity, healing, and change. He is developing new mural projects, accepting commissions, building his professional portfolio, pursuing public art opportunities, and creating work rooted in transformation, community, and legacy.

Harry is also stepping into curatorial and community work as a new member of Beauty Behind Bars, a DMV based arts collective dedicated to uplifting justice-impacted and underrepresented artists. Through exhibitions, grant development, public programming, and artist outreach, he is helping create space for voices that deserve to be seen, heard, and valued.

Harry’s work is unorthodox, honest, and deeply rooted in lived experience. His goal is not only to create beautiful images, but to inspire, challenge, and open conversations about where we come from, what we survive, and what we can still become.

HE CREATES is more than a name. It is a brand built from survival, discipline, creativity, and purpose. It is a testament to an artist who painted his way out of prison, and proof that a person’s story can become a tool for healing, legacy, and change.
